It's 60 AD in Rome. Deaths have stopped construction of the Empire's most audacious building project yet. Tiberius, "Muscle and Brains" for the financier boss backing the project, travels from Rome to investigate. Reeling from his partner's murder and saddled with a "seer" woman he doesn't trust, Tiberius uncovers layer upon layer of double-dealing and vengeance that shock even his cynical heart . . . one that's been unexpectedly set aflame by a slave woman at the site. In the ringing voice of a 21st century noir detective-profane, direct, compelling-Tiberius's tale of the road rips at full, passionate speed across the centuries, and from cover to cover. The first chapters of the book were Top 30 site-wide vote-getters on fiction-serialization website JukePop.com in summer and fall, 2014.

I'm not a reader of historical fiction. I can think of maybe 3 books I have read that would qualify as historical fiction and they were all science fiction based. So when an author friend of mine suggested this book on the Juke Pop website I wasn't totally sure if it would be something I was interested in reading. Well it only took about 2 chapters to get completely sucked in to the story and the characters. What really made this book for me is the combination of modern (and rather salty) language with vivid descriptions of all things Roman. Which makes this story read in a very contemporary voice despite the fact that it's all happening 2,000 years ago. Rome seems like an awesome place to be -- provided you are a Roman Citizen. But all the F bombs and cool descriptions of bathhouses, orgies, and Roman power wouldn't mean a thing without a terrific story. And we have a top notch story here! Murder, betrayal, business deals, love, mystery and sex (apparently Romans liked sex a lot). It's a page turning read and as a first novel it is very promising. One of the best books I've read this year or any year.

Gift.
Once I got started this book had me hooked. It was suspenseful and fast moving and had a little bit of history but with a modern day twist.
A wonderful and enjoyable book by a great new writer.
..as a book club choice, the title made me think this was a self help book. It was, however, an enriching romp through ancient Rome with a soldier as guide. He did inspire self improvement with his own journey. Holland's writing made his story be much like a contemporary soldier's would be today. Enjoyed this very much.
Clear your schedule because once you start The Road Presents Itself, you won't be able to put it down. Caustic, clever, and funny, with a lot of heart.
Wonderful book and so action pAcked. Great job to the author. More please. Will we see more of Tiberius? Maybe phase II?
Read the version in under 24 hours, but the characters have stayed with me well into the following week! This is testament to T. Holland's ability to keep me in suspense, invested in the deeply human (even abrasive) individuals who drive the story. Murder, mystery, who-done-it, 21st century dialogue, in an ancient setting, had me hooked. Well done! We who are about (and desperate) to read more Tiberius adventures salute you!
