Jeannie Thomas never intended to be a caregiver. She enjoyed a contented – if not common life – that was self-centered, enjoyable, and predictable. Little could she know that visiting a sick neighbor would forever alter the safe landscape of her once-established life.

A Caregiver’s Winding Road is a uniquely crafted account chilling at times, informative at times, and funny at times, but always brutally honest about Thomas’ experiences behind closed doors. Facing people with cancer, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, blindness and madness, she walks head-on into her fears about aging and dying.

On a parallel path, as her Winding Road weaves through the lives of society’s most vulnerable and needy, the author negotiates the crowded voices that holler in her own confused mind. Each voice vies for control as she faces life-altering choices that will result in debilitating burnout or fearless self-care. With rare insight, Jeannie provides ways to be compassionate, effective and generous in caring for others while also caring for oneself.

Told with humor, passion and uncanny insight, her stories disclose the struggle to uncover a mind that is willing to learn and a heart willing to give.

Whether you are a volunteer, family member or professional caregiver, at some time during life, almost everyone fills the role of caregiver.

Whatever your current situation, this book will inspire you and transform your relationships with all those you love.

A Caregiver Winding Road edition by Jeannie Thomas Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

I purchased this book thinking it would be a typical how-to reader for aspiring home healthcare workers. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was that and so much more. It is a collection of the stories of individual clients that Jeannie Thomas has worked with, poignant recollections distilled from years of experience working with those at very difficult times, and sometimes at the very ends, of their lives.

Each story contains valuable specific information about the hands-on techniques used in helping the bedridden and homebound: using a Hoyer lift to move immobile bodies, the need for constantly changing gloves to prevent contamination, how to slip medication under the radar by hiding it in food or drink. All kinds of practical ideas to help the caregiver get through another impossible day.

But beyond these tips and tricks and on a parallel track, the spiritual journey that Thomas catalogs is touching and life-affirming. In the midst of the sadness, pain, despair and loneliness of her clients, she has managed to present the story of illness and dying as a time when people need physical care, but just as importantly, to be given the dignity of being allowed to have their feelings, to be treated with respect no matter how their body may be betraying them, and ultimately, to die in their own way. She shows how she has been able to transcend the limitations of the material world and speak to the inner person, providing comfort, love, and even just her presence, to help the client back to health or to make their final transition in as much comfort as possible.

The back of the book is full of awareness for caregivers themselves. Learning to take care of oneself so as not to burn out, creating healthy boundaries between oneself and the client, and the importance of knowing one's own limitations.

I loved this little book and recommend it highly for anyone who is dealing with the needs of the elderly, ill, or dying. In other words, for all of us.

A Caregiver Winding Road edition by Jeannie Thomas Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

Important topic, since caregiving is inevitable for most all of us sooner or later. Through Jeannie's personal experiences, we gain insight on how to be compassionate, present, and take care of ourselves while we are caring for our elderly and ill loved ones. This is a book that "shows" not "tells", which I find to be most inspirational. A book well worth reading!
Since I am almost totally dedicated to caregiving at this time, I was able to easily identify with Jeannie Thomas and her many stories about caregiving. Each of her clients is unique and special, and Jeannie recognized that through her unique and special care for each one. An easy read, with many thoughts and ideas lingering afterwards.
A Caregiver's Winding Road is a short, but sweet tale of one woman's journey to learn how to take care of others and in turn she learned how to love virtual strangers and give them the peace and dignity to pass to the other side. I absolutely loved this book as I am going through an illness myself and it touched me in a way that very few novels have. It is a really sweet book and a quick and easy read. I highly recommend it!!

Jeannie Thomas is a trusted expert in caregiving who helps us to improve our relationships with our loved ones. She unveils her personal experiences with the neglected, sick, and dying elders who have touched her life, sharing her healthcare secrets with the intention of improving our time with our friends and families.

The true accounts of her experiences with the amazing people with whom she shared her journey made me cry and rejoice. Reading her accounts, I felt inspired to build even deeper connections with my loved ones.
She shows us better solutions, loving solutions, and builds an easy to follow road map for conscious caring of our loved ones.

I was curious to see what she's recommending for caregiving right now on her website [...] Take a look at it you may be surprised. I was.

I loved this little book filled with huge meaning and power and recommend it highly for anyone who is dealing with the needs of the elderly, ill, or dying...or anyone who wants to unconditionally love the people they care about.

You can't put a price tag on this book, it's priceless.
Faced with the possibility and reality of caring for my 90-year old mom. who has lived independently and sefl-sufficiently for the past 20 years, but who now is beginning to exhibit some signs of physical weakness and vulnerability, was something quite frightening to someone like myself who has not ever had the opportunity or been faced with the need to care for a loved one, other than my own young children when they were toddlers. This fear and anxiety was significantly lessened after reading Jeannie's wonderfully written account of her own experiences, as it offered significant insight into what one might face and expect while providing caregiving to a loved one, but more importantly how one's attitude while performing this service is a critical part of making the experience fullfilling for both the caretaker and the one being cared for.

These insights were invaluable and very encouraging. I have significant admiration for those who choose this occupation to care for people who are unable to care for themselves, as their service is "not about themselves", but about others. Reading about Jeannie's journey has also allowed me to prepare for my future and to try to remember to always be grateful and appreciative to anyone who might provide care to me some day. The bottom line is the caregiver responsibility can be viewed as a chore or as a gift of love, depending on how one chooses to accept into their belief system. I would definitely recommend Jeannie's book to anyone currently faced with caregive responsibility or who may face this responsibility in the future.
